Sociology of Work

Work is an important aspect on one's life. We spent most part of a day working and most part of our youth working. Sociology of work is an area of sociology which uses sociological lenses to study the world of work. It looks at the historical development of work. Work in a traditional society is different from work in a modern, urbanized society. In traditional society work was generally based at home and after the industrial revolution work has been moved out of our homes to 'factories' which started the separation of work from home. However, with recent development where more and more people are working from home, there is a reverse trend especially for work which involves the use of information technology.
It also looks at how the idea of work is changing in our society today. It looks at various issues related to world of work such as the tensions between various roles which are being played by an individual in a society vs the role as an employee (e.g. family vs work), deviant behavior at work, discrimination and alienation at work place. It also looks at how people choose their occupation and how a choice which is often considered an individual choice influences the well-being of a society.
